Nourishing Our Backyard

by Joseph Xu on October 10, 2022

Nourishing Our Backyard

How do we feed ourselves by feeding our communities? As housing prices and the wage gap increase, lower-income residents in Austin, TX are finding it increasingly harder to find their next meal and integrate themselves into a rapidly changing city.

With organizations like Whole Foods Market’s Nourishing Our Neighborhoods, Keep Austin Fed, and Foundation Communities, we have people who are working to connect us. Through food, we have engendered empathy and compassion for the people and the issues they face.

“The things that cause homelessness are the larger issue. It comes from systems whether it’s rooted in racism or prejudice.
I think that Austin, being as progressive as we are, I just feel like we do a lot of damage control
and we are trying our best but it’s hard to make change when all of those issues are coming from the system.”

Kimberly Love, Supportive Services Program Manager, Foundation Communities

Nourishing Our Neighborhoods Mapped Out

Whole Foods Market launched Nourishing Our Neighborhoods in September 2020, initially donating refrigerated vans to community-based food rescue organizations in 18 markets across the United States and Canada. The program has now expanded to cover 32 markets and organizations across these regions.
